About. The Canterbury Park subdivision has experienced periodic taste and odor issues with the water in the past that due to the age of water in the lines. Age of water is defined as how long the water is in the distribution system until it is used by the customer. To assist in mitigating the taste and odor concerns, the City has previously tried a number of temporary solutions including but not limited to: scouring the waterlines, flushing the lines, treating the water, and switching the source of the water. The City conducts monthly testing at over 100 locations and results have indicated that the City water system meets or exceeds the Federal and State regulatory standards.
Taste and odor issues are directly related to the age of water in the system and this can be attributed to the oversized water main (12” diameter) within the subdivision and the number of dead end lines that were constructed as the subdivision has developed. Taste and odor are secondary constituents that are not regulated. Flushing the lines through the use of hydrants or automatic flushers will only temporarily relieve these symptoms and is a costly and inefficient method for addressing water quality within an affected system. The only effective solution for this issue is to eliminate the dead end lines by looping and extending mains to other mains to eliminate stagnant segments.
Scope. The project will eliminate water quality issues related to the age of the water in the system. Water modeling has helped to identify areas where dead end waterlines are located. These lines will be looped and connected to other water system mainlines. Removing these dead end waterlines will assist in enhancing water circulation and reduce staff call outs to flush waterlines thus reducing system water loss.Schedule
