Join us for a groundbreaking ceremony for Independence Park, Phase 1.
The first phase of the project focuses on transforming the park from an active recreation park into a passive recreation park, with active recreation activities such as youth sports moving to new facilities, which better support those uses. Soccer field users will be relocated to the Hickory Slough Sportsplex to allow for the addition of new park elements.
Phase 1 improvements include the re-orientation of the park entry to Pearland Parkway, a small amphitheater stage and sloped berm seating area for special events, relocation and replacement of the playground as an all-inclusive play area, additional parking, improvements to electrical and lighting, minor architectural detail additions and resurfacing of the pavilion courts, connectivity plans and landscaping. The outdoor swimming pool, pool house, dog park and tennis courts will remain and are not included in this phase of improvements.
The park improvements were approved by voters in the 2007 Bond Program and included in the 2016 Fiscal Year Capital Improvement Program. The park project is part of several of Pearland City Council strategic goals including: Parks, Recreation & Events and Sustainable Infrastructure. The Parks Master Plan rates improvements to this park as a high priority.
