Some residents may have noticed a change in the smell or taste of their drinking water. As you may or may not know, one of the potable water sources in Pearland is the City of Houston. City of Houston's water enters Pearland via the FM 521 and Alice Street Pump Stations.
The City of Pearland along with neighboring municipalities who receive water from the City of Houston, have been notified by Houston of increased Geosmin and MIB levels in their water supply. Both are naturally occurring compounds that cause earthy or musty tastes or odors, but do not pose a health or safety concern.
The City’s water quality is continually monitored for compliance with TCEQ and EPA requirements. The increased levels of Geosmin and MIB should naturally return to the usual, insignificantly low levels in approximately two weeks. At which time, the water should return to normal.
