The Hickory Slough Regional Detention & Sportsplex is open. The $7.9 million Capital Improvement Program project is funded with the 2007 Bond Program and made possible through collaboration with local organizations and residential developers. The City’s recreation needs and population continue to rise, leading sports facilities to consistently reach capacity. The need for additional facilities was first identified in the 2005 Parks Master Plan, and the Hickory Slough Sportsplex was funded in the 2007 Bond Program.
The Sportsplex boasts:
- 6 sports fields (2 multipurpose, 3 lighted)
- 153-acre Detention Pond
- Parking to accommodate 423 vehicles
- Landscaped promenade and viewing deck
- Concessions, large shade canopy and restroom facilities
Project funding was made possible from local organizations and developers. The City of Pearland entered into an agreement with MHI Partnership Ltd., a private land developer, for water detention facility land. Under the terms of the agreement, MHI agreed to share 50 percent of design and construction costs for the Hughes Ranch Road extension, between Max Road to Stone Road. The road extension provides access to residential neighborhoods and the sports complex. The regional detention pond was co-funded by Brazoria County Drainage District #4 and improves stormwater drainage and provides relief to flood prone subdivisions adjacent to Hickory Slough. In 2014, the Pearland Economic Development Corporation contributed approximately $700,000 to make up for a funding shortfall due to rising construction costs.
