AMI Meter Components

Water meters are an integral part of the water system in Pearland. Without water meters that provide reliable and accurate information about water consumption in the Pearland system, there would be no way to maintain and grow the system to guarantee that Pearland residents always have good, clean water.

As with all equipment, parts age and technology improves over time. The most recent evolution for the City of Pearland was an upgrade from Automated Meter Read (AMR) to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) because the meters that were in the ground had reached the end of useful life and AMI is the new standard for water meters.

When is my meter calibrated/how many times a year?

The City of Pearland will test a meter for accuracy based on a customer request. This testing process confirms a meters ability to measure water based on AWWA standards. If the meter is reading water consumption accurately based on AWWA standards, the meter is retuned into service and the customer is responsible for the testing fee. In the event the meter is not measuring consumption based on AWWA standards, the meter is replaced, and the customer’s account is adjusted. Water meters are not calibrated by the City of Pearland.

How is my meter calibrated?

Water meters are not calibrated within the City of Pearland. Badger water meters ranging in size from 5/8”, 1”, 2” 3 & 4” that are not measuring water consumption within the required AWWA standards are replaced. These meters are ultrasonic in type therefore do not have moving parts to replace during traditional calibration processes. For large Neptune water meters ranging in size from 6” – 12” that testing indicates are not measuring water consumption per AWWA standards, these meters are repaired onsite by a third party vendor.
